In Memory of Susan Denise Atkins-Whitehouse
It's a Beautiful Day
In June 1970,
we are in the Santa Monica, California courthouse
in an AP film clip.
In the hallway,
we are outside the courtroom of interest.
The film cuts to inside the courtroom.
The courtroom is packed with people.
All seats are filled.
The back of the courtroom has wall to wall people who are standing.

Seated at a table,
a former associate of Susan
faces the back of the courtroom and answers questions
posed by the reporters there.
We cannot see the reporters, but we can hear them.
When the camera is on Susan's former associate,
we see Susan in the background.
We are waiting for the judge to enter the courtroom.
To Susan's right is her attorney.
Surrounding Susan and her attorney
are 7 guards that we can see.
A female guard holds Susan's left arm.

A reporter is heard asking Susan
"Anything you'd like to say?"
Susan shakes her head 'no' slightly, while smiling,
and Susan cheerfully responds
"It's a beautiful day!"
We hear the reporter repeat,
as though with disbelief,
what Susan just told him,
"it's a beautiful day".

addresses the reporters and says to them
"Gentlemen the judge is gonna take the bench
so would you please leave?
If you do maybe this thing
will continue in the future.
Thank you"
