In Memory of Susan Denise Atkins-Whitehouse

In Susan's works,
Susan tells us of a time when she was a young teen,
how she and a new neighbor
had become very close.
The new neighbors had moved in next door
to Susan and her family,
and they had invited Susan to attend
Sunday school with them,
and the two girls friendship grew.

In Susan's works,
she told of conversations they would have;
"...Sherry and I would often allow our conversations
to drift along serious, even solemn,
paths during the summer evenings.
We often talked about God.
Sherry was convinced he was real.
I, despite my weekly repentance,
wasn't so sure..."
Sherry told Susan how much her little sister
believed in God,
then Sherry continued,
"And what about my mother?..."
"...She says Jesus is real and is with us all the time."

"...Sherry went on.
'And I really think your mother believes in God.
She acts like it to me.'
I wasn't so sure.
I loved my parents,
but I felt alone many times in my own family.
I almost felt like an outsider
when Mike and Stevie were around.
And anger was beginning to smolder inside me
because of something else I had recently detected.
My mother and my father both drank a lot of liquor.
I had become aware of it in my father
several years before.
I was certain he was an alcoholic -
a word often used by other children about other people,
but whose meaning was not quite clear in my mind.
I knew that both my mother and father
were frequently drunk...'"
