In Memory of Susan Denise Atkins-Whitehouse
Susan's Spirit
Because of Susan's illness as of September 2, 2009,
her condition was gravely poor;
yet her spirit remained high.
On this date,
The California Board of Parole Hearings (CBPH),
denied Susan's request for compassionate release.
This was Susan's final plea for freedom.
The following passage is an excerpt from
The California Board of Parole Hearings
Decision Re: Susan Atkins, September 2, 2009:
(We have bolded key points)
"...And in regards to this matter the Panel
reviewed from the public and all relevant information
that was before it today in concluding that the prisoner
is not suitable for parole because the inmate currently poses
unreasonable risk of danger if released from prison..." *
Susan passed away 3 weeks and a day later
leaving behind a loving husband, friends and family,
and a legacy of inspiration.
Who do YOU think the risk of danger was to?
Based on the fame of Susan's actions,
the parole board didn't do the right thing,
or the moral thing, or the humane thing,
or the compassionate thing.
They did the convenient thing,
and that would be the end of it.
Susan may be gone,
but her story isn't over.
Susan's story is forever.
Those who judged Susan
will one day be judged themselves
by the highest authority.
We hope they will be ready, because
we don't think the Big Man upstairs
is going to be very happy with them.
see UMKC comment
* In fairness to the California
Board of Parole Hearings,
it should be noted that this excerpt
is only a small part of a lengthy explanation
by the CBPH as to their rationale
behind their denying Susan's plea.
In other words,
they didn't just say 'no' without offering
an explanation for their decision.
Whether or not their explanation was a valid one,
is for you to decide.
Regardless of what we feel about their decision,
today,
or on September 2, 2009,
it's finished.
Susan is with her Mom now.

Try not to be sad for Susan.
Just like the pictures here,
Susan's spirit was free as a bird.
The walls of Susan's physical confinement
could do nothing to stop her
from soaring like an eagle.
Remember that ~

It is part of the legacy Susan left us...
