In Memory of Susan Denise Atkins-Whitehouse

When You're Having Fun
By her parole hearing in 2005,
Susan had been in custody nearly 40 years,
near two thirds of her life.
Longer than Susan was free.
In this hearing,
Susan's attorney, during his closing statement,
spoke about the amount of time
that had passed,
and beyond,
since Susan last had
a disciplinary infraction.
Susan's attorney gave us a perspective
of just how long 25 years actually is,
a perspective that some may not realize, or appreciate.
Consider what Susan's attorney said;

Consider what Susan's attorney said;
Susan's Attorney: "...The 115 Susan got in '93, was reduced to a performance 115,
which means that she has actually been disciplinary free for almost
a quarter of a century..."
which means that she has actually been disciplinary free for almost
a quarter of a century..."

Almost a quarter of a century.
Nearly 25 years.
9,125 days.
How many of us could go 9,125 days,
and not make a mistake.
We couldn't.
Could you?
And Susan was confined quite longer
than 9,125 days.
Consider what Susan's attorney says as he continues;

An entire generation of Americans born, raised,
grew up and had their own kids and she hasn't had
a disciplinary infraction..."

Earlier, that 25 year time span didn't seem like much,
did it,
but Susan's attorney made an important point,
didn't he.
An observation not readily seen at first glance.
If you are 25 years of age, or older,
look back at your life,
and reflect on what has happened in your life
during those past 25 years,
during those past 9,125 days.

Susan's attorney continues...
Susan's Attorney: "...At this time CDC guards can retire after 20 years.
That means there's a whole group of guards that have
come into this institution, done their entire career and
retired on pension and Susan hasn't had a
single disciplinary infraction..."
