In Memory of Susan Denise Atkins-Whitehouse
One of Susan's Earliest Lessons
As we know,
Susan was interviewed by a California news reporter in 1976.
During the interview, Susan made a statement
of paramount significance;
we discover what it represents for Susan,
what it can mean for us,
and how we can apply what Susan said
all those years ago,
in our own lives today -
Yeah,
Susan can do that -
We rediscover Susan's statement in her interview.
Is Susan's ideal the foundation
on which she rebuilt the rest of her life?
Of course it is!
Susan started anew,
and lived her life in spite of her incarceration.

Think about what Susan said in 1976,
and how Susan's life progressed from there.
Susan and the reporter are seated at a table
catty-cornered across from each other,
in a room with windows. The windows are behind them,
and are covered by drawn tan colored drapes.
On the table Susan and the reporter share
is Susan's bible.
Here again is a portion of Susan's interview from 1976.
We have bolded Susan's statement;
and how Susan's life progressed from there.

We have bolded Susan's statement;
Reporter: "Can you understand why many people, perhaps most people outside are
going to feel that you don't deserve parole,
that you should never be given parole.
You're aware of that"
Susan: "Yes..."
Reporter: "Well, so what if you spend the rest of your life in this prison?"
Susan: (smiling) "Then I spend the rest of my life in this prison, umm..."
Reporter: "Is that thought depressing to you though?"
Susan: "No, because I know that, umm, how can I put it,
I'm content! I've found peace inside! And it does not, it's not determined
by my situation, or my circumstance, or my physical surroundings"
Reporter: "How's it come about?"
Susan: "How does peace come about? My peace?"
Reporter: "uh huh..."
Susan: "Well I found peace through salvation, in Jesus,
and just knowing that I've been forgiven by God is sufficient for me"
Reporter: "And the fact that you know out there people probably can't forgive you..."
Susan: "yes..."
Reporter: "...has no effect on you..."
Susan: "Um, no. Uh, because they're not the ones that I have to face
in the end when I die,
I have to face God and it's His forgiveness that determines my peace"
going to feel that you don't deserve parole,
that you should never be given parole.

Reading what Susan said is compelling.
Hearing what Susan said is consuming.
To see with our own eyes the intense conviction in Susan's face as she says
"I'm content! I've found peace inside!",
leaves us speechless.
Susan speaks with certainty
which ignites and brilliantly illuminates
what we are capable of.
Here is one of Susan's earliest lessons.

Susan told us her peace is not determined by
her situation, or her circumstance,
or her physical surroundings,
then elucidated further.
Here is something of tremendous value in the lesson
Susan presents to us.
We don't know about you,
but Susan has our undivided attention...
