In Memory of Susan Denise Atkins-Whitehouse
Yes, it Was
(Susan's 18th Newsletter)
Within one of Susan's most passionate and powerful letters,
her 18th newsletter, in her works
The Dove's Nest Newsletters A Collection of Christian Newsletters
(by Susan Atkins-Whitehouse),
Susan offers her thoughts on something that she asks
us to consider and contemplate.
It is not our intention
to take this passage out of context;
it is all a part of Susan's entire letter,
and we cannot overemphasize
that the entire letter be read
in order to be understood, and appreciated.
Susan included this statement within her letter
for our consideration and contemplation.
We wished to provide it here;

"Because the prison system is a system devised
by the world to deal with sin, wickedness, offenders of society,
its means of dealing with offenders is not going to be Godly.
Its purpose in this day and age is not to rehabilitate,
even though by name it is a department of Corrections,
its purpose now is solely punishment.
But correction through punishment-
even harsh, cruel, or unnecessary punishment-
will not work.
And correction through behavioral modification
doesn't always work either,
because it may change only
the external behavior of an offender.
The real answer is correction through the changing
of the heart of the individual-
through redemption.
But because we insist on separating
Church and State completely,
this is not a politically correct option for the handling of the incarcerated.
I include that thought
for your consideration and contemplation"
